Ki Budo Ryu Aikido is a system of teaching aikido that was founded by Gary WineBrenner in the early 1980s. After studying with various aikido schools across the states and internationally for many years, Soke Gary started the KBR system as a way to teach aikido with a focus on specific principles that would help students understand why techniques work. He articulated these 5 principles as follows:

  • Unity of Mind and Body

  • Non-resistance

  • Leading Control

  • Continuous Motion

  • Circular Motion

Referencing a classical aikido foundation, KBR also aspires to focus on the more practical elements of aiki with strong tai sabaki or body movement with key aiki taiso or mind/body exercises as the first essential building block of quality technique. This informs our practice in very tangible ways, to include early introduction into randori or free exercise as well as our understanding of the relationship between uke (the person receiving the technique) and tori (the person executing the technique).
