What is Aikido?

Aikido is the martial art founded by O’Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. The term itself means “way of harmonizing energy” and is built on the specific moral philosophy of universal peace, aspiring to protect the attacker as much as the defender. In practice, Aikido emphasizes non-resistance and redirection of force, relying on joint manipulation and throws to neutralize attacks.

What makes KBR different from other Aikido classes?

There are several quality schools in the Omaha/Lincoln area. We encourage any prospective student to take the time to visit multiple schools as they decide where they want to train. That said, the differences from school to school tend to hinge around how the classes are taught. KBR is unique because of its emphasis on principles and the associated approach to teaching. We also tend to be informal.

What can I expect at a class?

Classes begin with warmups that include falling and rolling (ukemi), movement exercises (aiki taiso and tai sabaki), free play (randori), and isolating specific techniques (waza).

What should I wear?

If you have a gi, feel free to wear it. Otherwise, sweatpants or loose-fitting clothes are a good idea. We do not recommend jeans or shorts. In the long term, we can recommend gis for purchase.

Is there a class for kids?

No, not currently, although this has been under discussion.
